Barrie (1860-1937), best known for his character Peter Pan, was born on May 9th 1860 in Kirriemuir, Angus and it is there in the Little Red Town that the festival Barrie 2010: A Celebration Of Imagination was selebrated for two weeks from 7th -23rd May this year.

170th Birthday of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – (Global)

Russian composer of the Romantic era. His wide ranging output includes symphonies, operas, ballets, instrumental and chamber music and songs. Hubble Space Telescope’s 20th Anniversary – (Global)

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is a space telescope that was carried into orbit by a space shuttle in 1990. Although not the first space telescope, Hubble is one of the largest and most versatile, and is well-known as both a vital research tool and a public relations boon for astronomy. The HST was built by the United States space agency NASA, with contributions from the European Space Agency, and is operated by the Space Telescope Science Institute.

Jan Amos Komensky’s 418th Birthday – (Czech Republic, Slovakia)

Czech teacher, educator, and writer. He served as the last bishop of Unity of the Brethren, and became a religious refugee and one of the earliest champions of universal education, a concept eventually set forth in his book Didactica Magna. He is often considered the father of modern education.

St. Patrick’s Day – (Selected Countries)

The most commonly recognised of the patron saints of Ireland. It began as a purely Catholic holiday and became an official feast day in the early 17th century. It has gradually become more of a secular celebration of Ireland’s culture.

Pi Day – (Selected Countries)

Pi Day and Pi Approximation Day are two unofficial holidays held to celebrate the mathematical constant p (pi). Pi Day is celebrated on March 14, or in the month/day date format as 3/14; since 3, 1 and 4 are the three most significant digits of p. March 14 is also the birthday of Albert Einstein so the two events are sometimes celebrated together. Pi Approximation Day is held on July 22, or in the more common day/month date format as 22/7, which is an approximate value of p.

Vasaloppet – (Sweden)

Vasaloppet is a annual long distance (90 km) cross-country ski race (ski marathon) on the first Sunday of March in northwestern Dalarna, Sweden between the village of Salen and town of Mora. It is the oldest, one of the longest, and in popular consideration the biggest cross-country ski race in the world.[citation needed] In the 80th race, held on 7 March 2004, some 15,500 skiers competed in the main event. A total of more than 40,000 participated in one of the seven different races held during the first week of March. The race was started in 1922 and was inspired by a run by King Gustav Vasa in 1520. The winner of the first race was Ernst Alm from Norsk, 22 years old, who is also the youngest ever winner of the race.

Vivaldi’s Birthday – (Global)

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (March 4, 1678 – July 28, 1741), nicknamed il Prete Rosso (“The Red Priest”) was an Italian Baroque composer, priest, and virtuoso violinist, born in Venice. Vivaldi is recognized as one of the greatest Baroque composers, and his influence during his lifetime was widespread over Europe. Vivaldi is known mainly for composing instrumental concertos, especially for the violin, as well as sacred choral works and over 40 operas. His best known work is a series of violin concertos known as The Four Seasons.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a United States federal holiday marking the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around the time of King’s birthday, January 15. King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. He was assassinated by a prison escapee in 1968 on the balcony of a hotel as he went to get some fresh air before making a speech.
